General Meeting Minutes - April 2015

Christmas Party has been confirmed for Saturday December 6. at Delta Golf Course. Cost TBA.
Insurance
- In regards to insurance, I have investigated this further with our personal insurance agent a 2nd time. Being we do not organize events exclusive to our Assoc where we are on public property (car show for example or slalom event) it is not necessary. When we go to the Fun Run for example you are responsible for your own car insurance & medical insurance. Even if we are travelling together as a group, you are still responsible for your own insurance. I understand if someone outside our organization were to join us and be injured, they would be covered by a) their own ICBC insurance or medical insurance.
- An individual who was posting signs for an event was injured may not have been covered if their club did not have insurance. However, they were posting signs for a closed event, but the club insurance would only cover them for the time they were at the event, not from the time you leave home.
- We are a small Association and do not operate on a large scale as some of the CAR CLUBS do. Should the day come where we are a larger organization and do more events, this situation can be reviewed again. In order to purchase this insurance (should we ever need it) the number of members to qualify for insurance is 100 ACTIVE members. We do not have the numbers to qualify, we would be required to become part of another association, that raises other issues. This matter is being tabled for the time being.
Fun Run
The Official Fun Run dates are May 1 - 3 beginning in Seligman. Apr 28 - May 4
Rick & Alex are leaving mid week for Williams. We will be meeting Bob & Lorrie, Bill & Barb at the Motel 6 West in Williams. Our member Marcus will be there as well as Sean & Karen from Flagstaff.
George & I will be flying to Palm Springs, renting a car. We will be staying 3 nights in the Wigwam Motel in Rialto Ca. On Sunday we are meeting with Scott Piotrowski who is the 2016 Route 66 Festival organizer for Los Angeles. The dates for the 2016 festival are not confirmed we will keep you up to date as we have information. The last time there was any type of Route 66 event in the LA area was the San Bernadino event prior to the Festivals which are being held East & West each year. It will be nice to have an LA Route 66 event, as LA is an area with several alignments and difficult to see when you are driving. Scott also arranges walking tours of Route 66 in LA.
We can work on suggestions for itineraries next month for the Fun Run or to the Festival in LA. If you want to make suggestions for routes, or places to see — State Parks, National Monuments, Auto collections all suggestions are welcome.
Newsletter:
Our newsletter Editor Brad Jones who moved to the Island a few years ago has come into bad health and has stepped down from the position on Newsletter Editor. Tim has offered to take over this position, he & Brad were going to work together to transfer the newsletter template over and any outstanding articles. Tim will write an article from his Blog on him & his Dad’s prostate Cancer fundraiser ride on Route 66 last year. Our last newsletter was in Nov/Dec. We hope to publish twice a year but without content that cannot happen. Please write about any events you have done, it does not have to be a Route 66 event.
Route 66 News
As it was mentioned in Feb, one of our members back east passed away from an illness. If anyone had ever been to the Gay Parita station in Missouri, Gary enjoyed talking with the visitors who came by.
He created a mock Sinclair Station outside his house and would chat with visitors who stopped to take pictures. Gary Turner did what he did best, sharing wonderful stories and advice about RT 66. He was honoured a few years ago with an Award for his Route 66 support. Gary loved to serve Ice Cream, cold drinks, watermelon to everyone who stopped by. He was getting so popular he created a covered bbq area around the back of his Sinclair Garage and hosted many a BBQ for roadies & motorcycle groups from around the world who would call to let him know when they were coming. With Gary you could not visit for a short time, every visit was a few hours or more, he was a delight to visit with and a genuine person. If this was your first trip on Route 66, he would encourage you to buy David Wickline’s book Images of 66 and have it autographed by the people in the book you met along 66. He was never out to make a profit on any of his merchandise, he gave everyone something from his gift shop, we received t-shirts on our first visit, the next time we saw Gary, he gave us a thermometer of his station. A genuine route 66 Ambassador.
Jerry McClanahan, Route 66 Artist from Chandler Ok was asked to paint a picture of someone’s car outside Gary’s station a few years ago. That print was re-created as a memorial to Gary, proceeds went to the family. George & I, Tim each purchased one of these prints. They sold for $66
We hope his Daughter continues what Gary started. The last time we were visiting 2012 his daughter was there to help with her Mom who had Alzheimers, and was also working with Gary in the gift shop.
THE GREAT RACE 2015
The Great Race was created in 1983 by 2 individuals to assist an ailing race promoter who planned to race pre-WW II automobiles across the US for a massive purse. Many people doubted this type of race was feasible but with help from a crew of like-mined car just they pulled it off.
2 Years ago Tevie participated in the Great Race along the Great Lakes in Ontario & crossing into the US. He did not ‘win’ by any means but he & Lisa enjoyed the race. Nigel Matthews was his support vehicle.
June 20 the Great Race will be along Route 66 starting from the St Louis area to Santa Monica. There will be over 120 cars participating ranging in years from 1915 - 1972. Each stop is free to the public to come and see the cars.

General Meeting Minutes - February 2015
Canadian Route 66 Association Minutes for Sunday February 8, 2015
Brunch meeting held at Delta Golf Course
Christmas Party has been confirmed for Saturday December 6. at Delta Golf Course. Cost TBA.
- At the last meeting, Geoff had a few suggestions for Garage Tours. I have arranged for a Garage tour for Sunday March 8 in Coquitlam. We will arrange for a staging/meeting area prior to arriving at our destination & a map/address will be handed out at that time.
- Vancouver Collector Car Show & Auction is not being held in conjunction with the International Auto Show in March. Last year they had a few issues with how the auction was run, and are working on making changes & will skip 2015 ignored to re-launch the event for 2016. The current state of the CAD dollar had a little to do with their decision as well.
Fun Run
The Official Fun Run dates are May 1 - 3 beginning in Seligman. The tentative route departing from Vancouver April 24 or 25 would be:
Eugene Or, Sacramento Ca, Rialto Ca, Williams Az, Seligman, Kingman, Lake Havasu or Laughlin, Barstow Ca, Virginia City.
With the dollar right now, it may make for a little more challenging trip expense wise. Gas is in expensive right now, and most of the hotels we choose are not overly expensive.
The Fun Run hotels themselves, Williams, Kingman, Laughlin (?) need to be reserved NOW if you are interested in attending. I looked at Expedia for Kingman hotels in CAD funds and the Quality Inn next door to the El Trovatore in Kingman is going for $100 CAD /night……not worth it. There is always the Motel 6 if you want to stay there. I am supporting the El Trovatore, it is fun to see the changes Sam & Monica have made each year to the motel. Hopefully by summer they will have the pool operational.
We can work on suggestions for itineraries in March. If you want to make suggestions for routes, or places to see — State Parks, National Monuments, Auto collections all suggestions are welcome. However it all must be worked out so the itinerary arrives at the Fun Run & that we are not driving for hours on end looking for a suitable place to stay for everyone. Following the Fun Run, anything is possible.
Route 66 News
The “Route 66: The Road and the Romance” which ended in December at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles was declared “the most popular show in the history of the museum” by its president. The museum doesn’t keep specific counts for exhibits, but it was estimated more than 50,000 visited “Route 66: The Road and the Romance” during its seven-month run.
A security guard said that on the Saturday before the last day there were so many people in the galleries you could hardly move, people that did not know each other were constantly striking up conversations.
Cynnie Troup, the daughter of Bobby Troup (“Get your kicks on” Route 66″) was also on hand to talk about the cross-country map created by her mother and father on the trip west.
The Will Rogers Museum in Claremore, Oklahoma, will include a of Route 66 promotion, aka the Will Rogers Memorial Highway, during a series of changes for the upcoming year.
References of the Will Rogers Highway date back to the early 1940s. A well-known monument dedicating the Will Rogers Highway also was installed in Santa Monica, California, near the Santa Monica Pier, in 1952.
Fun Run.
Suggestions for this year would be to visit the temporary location Peterson Museum in Los Angeles or wait until 2016 to visit the renovated museum. The Nethercut Collection in Sylmar Ca would also be a great location to visit. All the restored vintage cars on display are used in parades , Concours events & other special occasions. The vehicles on display are ‘floated’ off the marble floors. They also have a Canadian connection, 1937 Canadian Pacific Royal Hudson Locomotive #2839, built in Montreal!
One of our Route 66 contacts in Los Angeles who organizes guided Route 66 walking tours. Los Angeles can be difficult to drive through and see the Route 66 sights. If a Route 66 walking tour was possible, the plan would be to stay 2 nights in the Wigwam Motel in Rialto Ca. ‘Enjoy Route 66 the Wigwam Way’
Following the Fun Run, one suggestions would be to stay 2 nights in Laughlin and take a Topok River Tour to see the Petroglyphs — if the group has a Max 6 people interested we could charter the boat for $25 per person. Otherwise the tour is $50 per person with a max of 6 (other) people in the boat.
In Las Vegas if anyone is interested in a tour of Art Golstrom’s collection of Nostalgia Street Rods in Las Vegas, this collections contains more than 160 working vintage cars, dating back to Ford Model T's, and just about everything else, from signed memorabilia to antique telephones. You will see old jail locks with giant keys, a check for $925 signed by Thomas Edison, a 1955 Chevrolet with a 1,600-horsepower engine, the second gas-powered Maytag washing machine sold in Nevada, a piece of the Hindenburg and much more. The tour is available at 10am or 2pm for a cost of $20 per person
George will provide further information at the next meeting. Accommodation for the Fun Run itself must be arranged ASAP. If you are interested in attending the Fun Run regardless if you are driving with the group, please contact Bonnie with your credit card information so your accommodation can be arranged. bgame@mac.com or 604-802-0490

Other Business
Bill Blackall wanted the members to be aware of their collector car insurance validity if you have a secondary policy in addition to ICBC. Make certain both policies are valid. Bill had a situation where his secondary policy for Liability Insurance which was to be automatically renewed each year & was not notified the policy had been cancelled.
50/50 Draw - $37 collected. Congratulations to Debbie Richdale who was the winner of the 50/50 draw.
Next meeting date Sunday February 8 - 10am Delta Golf Course
