General Meeting Minutes - September 2016

Canadian Route 66 Association Minutes

Sunday September 18, 2016

Brunch meeting held at Delta Golf Course

Bonnie mentioned the upcoming Route 66 International Festival being held in Los Angeles November 11 – 13. November 11, 2016 will be the 90th Anniversary of Route 66. Los Angeles is planning a festival for the November 11 weekend. Members who would like to attend the festival portion of the event should wait until further information is posted. At this time all that is mentioned is a conference for preservationists, which George & Bonnie will represent the Association.
The festival area will be near Route 66’s original western terminus of Seventh and Broadway in downtown L.A. In 1926, it was one of the busiest intersections in America. (The terminus later was moved further west to Santa Monica.) Los Angeles historic Theatre District is undergoing a big revitalization in time for the event.

Thank you to Walter & Joan Shemly for once again hosting our annual picnic August 6. We had a great turn out and the weather warmed up after a chilly start to the day. Several people had fun on Walter’s man-made beach playing horseshoes.

Association Newsletter:

Tim Kikkert, our newsletter editor has asked for stories from the membership about any road trips you have taken this year or any awards you may have won during Show & Shine season. We need more content to fill up the pages of our newsletter, which will be going to the printer in late October.
Please send your pictures with a short story to
tkikkert@shaw.ca.

Discussion was held regarding events involving the Association, but not organized by the association. In future Bonnie will inform the membership of any events which may be of interest to the Association – i.e. Birch Bay Rollback weekend, where Bill Forbes sponsored an award on our behalf.
If you know of an event such as the weekly get together’s at A&W etc, please let Bonnie know so we can inform all the members. In Burnaby, the weekly get together at White Spot at Kingsway/Waltham next to OK Tire will be Thursday September 22 at 6pm & weather permitting Thursday September 29. White Spot offers a coupon for free fries & a drink to the drivers who purchase a burger.

Route 66 News:

During the recent brush fires in Los Angeles last month, the historic Route 66 diner, Summit Inn, which was built in 1952, was destroyed by the Blue Cut Fire. The Summit Inn was located at the summit of Cajon Pass (Interstate 15). The current owners plan to rebuild the restaurant, as it appeared before the fire & hope to have the new restaurant open by late 2017. The original sign still remains and the owners will have it re-lit as soon as electricity is restored to the property.
Ironically the restaurant’s kitchen had just been replaced by a previous incident. In March 2014, a drunk driver was arrested for crashing a stolen van into the restaurant’s kitchen. Thankfully this happened before the restaurant opened that morning.

Annual Christmas Party:

Reminder- Saturday December 3 wll be the Annual Canadian Route 66 Christmas party, at the Delta Golf Course. This will be the start of our 20th year as an association. Menus should be available by the end of October and the cost will be known at that time. Door Prizes are always appreciated. We will forgo the FUN GIFTS for this year.

Welcome to our new member Ken Phillips who joined the meeting & decided to become a member. We look forward to getting to know you.

Ken drew the winning 50/50 ticket, $30, was won by Gord Ramberg.
Meeting adjourned at 10:45 am, as there was another group coming in after our meeting.

Next meeting will be Sunday October 16, this will be our AGM as required by the Society Act.
We will need to discuss our bylaws & constitution, as it is required to submit such documents online to the new BC Registry Services.
