Upcoming Events:

Annual Canadian Thanksgiving Road Trip -

Bonnie reviewed plans for the upcoming Canadian Thanksgiving road trip. The route this year will be in and around Snoqualmie WA, Saturday &  Leavenworth WA on Sunday. Mark your calendars for Sat & Sun October 12/13.  Thanksgiving weekend always coincides with the annual Monroe Swap Meet.

Saturday morning we will meet at the Custer Rest area on I5 (near exit 270), have breakfast at BABE’s Restaurant in Ferndale. Follow I-5 until Everett, leave the Freeway and take a scenic back road drive into Historic Snoqualmie:

In Snoqualimie we would visit:

Northwest Railway Museum Visit a Victorian depot. Learn how the railway changed Washington and influenced settlement. See and feel the excitement of a working railroad. Experience what travel was like before Interstate highways. Hear all the bells and whistles. Travel back in time. No admission charge to visit the depot and grounds.

Flying Frog Antiques and Collectibles  located cross the street from the Snoqualmie Railroad Depot. The store features Star Wars and Star Trek collectibles, dolls, die-cast models, furniture, fossils, crystals and lots of other neat stuff! Look for the bubbles above the sidewalk and you will know you are in the right place.

Snoqualmie Falls . At the falls, there is a large park, with gift shop, observation deck, the Salish Lodge and the famous 270 foot waterfall. Admission is free.

Note: I was deprived of viewing Twin Falls Idaho on the Fun Run route this year so I am going to get my fix........!!

Fall City Roadhouse & Inn  - a completely restored 1920′s landmark building.

formerly The Riverside Tavern and The Colonial Inn & has been at the same location since 1916. In 1966, The Colonial Inn was a local favorite, and a destination restaurant.

In 1990, the exterior of the Colonial Inn was the used for the TV series Twin Peaks.

Snoqualmie Falls Candy Factory & Cafe a 1950s-style diner, located in the heart of historic Snoqualmie, known for their offers award-winning, hand-crafted candies. & famous peanut brittle, caramel corn or salt water taffy.

Just for the Guys:---  Carmichael's Tru Value Hardware-  A quintessential vintage hardware store (possibly similar to Steveston Hardware)

Following the day in Historic Snoqualmie we can have dinner at the Fall City Roadhouse or somewhere else depending on the time. Accommodations in Snoqualmie are pricy & not pet friendly. In North Bend, the 2 motels are dingy (according to trip advisor) so the best place that will accept pets is in Cle Elum. Rates at the EconoLodge/Cascade Mountain Inn (good reviews on Trip Advisor) are $66.60/night with a pet fee of $20.

Sunday we will continue to Leavenworth and spend a few hours there before returning home. It seems Octoberfest is only Friday & Saturday October 11/12 in Leavenworth. For those who do not drink beer.....this is not a problem. It may mean less crowds, but Leavenworth is busy most weekends.

After a few hours visiting Leavenworth, enough time for lunch and a little shopping, we would then work our way home.

Anyone who wishes to have Turkey Dinner could arrange to make dinner on Monday, or be home in time for someone else to cook dinner Sunday night.

**PLEASE LET BONNIE KNOW ASAP, IF YOU WILL BE ATTENDING SO I CAN MAKE MOTEL ARRANGEMENTS**

Christmas Party

Christmas Party is scheduled for Saturday December 7 at Delta Golf Course. Cost will be determined by the end of October or early November.

Other News:

Club Picnic -

Our annual picnic in August was rained out, the only day it rained that month. Gord & Sue Ramberg graciously offered their home nearby for our alternate location. 10 local members attended along with our Washington members, Dave & Linda Baine,  Paul & Judi Dexter, Bill & Barbara Forbes. They all braved the border and the rain to visit with everyone. Thanks everyone for coming, Thank You Gord & Sue for the use of your lovely home and the great desserts you served.

Route 66 International Festival - 2013

George & Bonnie once again attended the International Route 66 festival which was held in Joplin MO Aug 1 - 4.  Joplin was the site of a devastating tornado in 2011. The festival got off to a start Thursday evening with cruise along ‘66’ from downtown Joplin to the Drive In theatre in Carthage MO, - the movie CARS was the special feature for the event. Tickets were sold in advance by the car load. You could not enter the Drive In unless your name was on the list. Tickets sold out in a matter of hours, mostly from locals who came with their kids and festival attendees. There were 1200 kids in total at the Drive In. Pixar arranged for Mater & Lightning to attend the festival for the entire weekend. The ‘Sheriff’ Michael Wallace was on hand to sign autographs & deputize the young children. This was a great opportunity to introduce the next generation to Route 66.

Friday morning, a Summit meeting was held at City Hall for all the representatives of the Route 66 Associations.

The Route 66 Alliance co sponsored and helped organize the Joplin International Route 66 Festival. The Alliance was formed a few years ago to be a supportive Non Profit corporation for the 8 states along the route. They offer assistance in how to apply for cost share funding and grants, and help with ongoing projects etc. Their goal is to help all the states work together, not individually, as done in the past. They will represent all 8 States as a single voice to talk to local govt’s if needed.

3 Murals were created for the festival, each made from individual tiles which will not fade in the sunlight and are guaranteed to last approx. 50 years . The 2 murals in Joplin were officially dedicated on Friday by the Mayor of Joplin, who welcomed all the international visitors to her city.

As always during a festival there is a’restoration project’. We helped paint the exterior of a former chicken fast food restaurant which is going to re-open soon.

The main festival events took place in Galena KS on Friday and Downtown Joplin MO on Saturday. Both with a big street festival with several bands, and a car show. Pixar brought along Lightning & Mater for the kids. Many pictures were taken.. Other activities and the dedication of another mural in Galena KS were held on Saturday. In Galena they also opened the newly restored ‘Haunted Mansion and Bordello’. Tours were being given by two paranormal specialists. The lady's were in costume and looked great.
